State Police Helicopter Crew, Using Infrared Camera, Located Gas Leak Under Lawrence Street
September 14, 2018–At approximately 11 p.m. last night, the the Troopers flying MSP Air 5, a helicopter from the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, were working over Lawrence, providing overwatch support during the ongoing response after the gas explosions and fires.
Trooper Eric Fairchild, the mission’s Tactical Flight Officer, was monitoring the aircraft’s FLIR (Forward Looking InfraRed) camera when he observed an anomaly under the pavement at the intersection of Broadway and Andover Street. The flight crew advised the Lawrence Fire Department of the observation. Firefighters responded and discovered a major gas leak under the pavement.
Through their attention to detail, the crew of MSP Air 5 likely prevented another catastrophic event. The photos show the gas leak underground as detected by the Air Wing. The strange shape is the gas leak, seen in close up and from a wider angle. In the third photo, a firefighter stands over the leak.
