Red Sox legend David Ortiz is in stable condition after being shot in the back in a nightclub in his home country of the Dominican Republic. Ortiz’s brother, Eloy Ortiz, said the former baseball star was in surgery late Sunday night. WHDH reported Ortiz was shot once in the back at a Santo Domingo nightclub, with the bullet exiting through his stomach.

One person is in custody. Police told reporters it was not an attempted robbery; first reports indicated it was.

There was no immediate reason given for the shooting. Police said the investigation is still ongoing.

Dominican reports say Ortiz told a doctor, “Please do not let me die, I am a good man.”

The Red Sox said they would fly Ortiz back to the United States for treatment if necessary, but did not issue a statement as of midnight.

Video from the nightclub shows a person walking up behind Ortiz, pointing a gun and firing at Ortiz. Ortiz collapses while the crowd scatters in panic.
