Alert: PCLI Cancels 2020 SPJ Region 1 Conference
Long Island Strong news – Press Club of Long Island reports 3.10.2020. Because of concerns about travel and large gatherings during the coronavirus outbreak, the Press Club of Long Island is canceling the Society of Professional Journalists Northeast Regional Conference scheduled for March 20-21. Several colleges have instructed their faculty not to bring students to conferences for the time being. And some speakers and registrants have voiced concern about attending. The final deciding factor was Hofstra University, our co-host and site of the conference, canceling classes this week after a student came down with flu-like symptoms after attending a conference at which another participant was diagnosed with coronavirus. We thank everyone who had agreed to come and speak or had registered to attend. And we thank our sponsors: Hofstra, Newsday, News 12, AJC Communications, Herald Community Newspapers and Blank Slate Media.Contributions from the sponsors will be refunded as will attendee registration fees.Next year’s regional conference will be in Bristol, Rhode Island, on April 9-10, and we expect to host the conference again on Long Island in the spring of 2022.Thanks for your understanding.-The PCLI Board
